PhotoAssistant.Net is now 1ProPhoto.Com & 1ProCrew.COm

It was 10 years ago that a photographer made the comment: "There are no good photo assistants any more."  To which I replied, "There are plenty of great photo assistants, you just need to be willing to pay them what there worth." She said, "Well I don't know where to find them."

That was the impetus in starting PhotoAssistant.Net

At that time there were 12 other web sites also trying to offer that same services. Currently, to the best of my knowledge there are only 3 active sites left. One in the U.K., and the one run by a photo rental company in La. that data mined our databases a couple of years ago. Even so PhotoAssistant.Net is still the largest online database of photo assistants & digital technicians in the world.

PhotoAssistant.Net started out as an assistants resource for the commercial photo industry. My primary goal was to focus on those photographers shooting editorial, catalog, advertising and fashion, that I and others had worked with here in NYC, La. & Miami.

As the site grew so did our audience. Photo school teachers and professors started pointing there students towards our site, and photographers not shooting for Rolling Stone, Vogue, Nike, or Victoria's Secret are using the site and the forums.

This lead to the decision more than a year ago to begin the process towards rebuilding and re-branding the web site from one that was limited or focused on photo assistants and digital technicians to one that will be focused on including all members of the photo industry.

As with every aspect of our industry change happens, change is needed, and change is sometimes good.
So let me take this opportunity to introduce you to our two new web sites which will launch April 1 2008.

I believe that by creating these two new venues we can broaden our audience and provide a greater resource for the industry as a whole rather than appearing as "just an assistants web site". Because of the numerous changes I have and am seeing in the photo industry, I believe that the only way we as an industry can continue to exist and grow is through a course of inclusion rather than exclusion.

We will continue to do our best to bring you timely information as we get it about new products and services. And when ever possible give you our "Honest opinion" that many of you have come to expect.
I believe, and have seen, that there is a real lack of information sharing and and even greater lack of proper education for young photographers both in the schools they are attending and from those they are trying to work with.
With that in mind a great deal of what we will be presenting will be geared towards information sharing and online tutorials. A number of these have all ready been edited and will be appearing in the coming days. while others are currently being produced and edited.
In addition we will be creating a variety of new lighting workshops. ( Dates to be announced in the new sites newsletter.)
And after nearly 3 years we are still the only ones in the world (per our research & your comments) offering a 2 day hands on Digital Tech workshops ®™ featuring Capture 1 Pro software and Digital backs. We love presenting these workshops and it seems that everyone else enjoys them too since we are now seeing attendees from across the country and also from France, the U.K., Switzerland, & Australia. Were also seeing employees of American Express publishing, QVC, Publishers Clearing house and more than a dozen studio personal from some famous and a few infamous photographer studios.
Last week I spoke with a photographer and told him of our photo assistants boot camp and the one request he had was: "..teach them to load film!" "Nobody knows how to load film any more." For those that haven't clicked through the site there are in fact film loading tutorials in the tech and tutorials section.
I also believe that we are going to see another resurgence in the use of large format film photography. Though maybe not as great as I would personally like, it will nonetheless mean that those not familiar with 4x5 & 8x10 will have to learn or brush up on their skills. This will also provide an opportunity for photographers with true technical skill to stand out from those that only shoot digital. So yes, a 4x5/8x10 workshop is in the works also.
When ever possible we will incorporate as much traditional photo & studio skills as possible into these workshops and show there relation to and combined use with the digital tools we are currently using.

Finally I would like to thank Oleh & Isaac of Trec Rental in New York City for having been there for us from the very beginning.
And to Fred, Rob, Brian & Dave ("Boogie") at FotoCare Rentals
along with  Jacob, George, Noel, & Ryan at Adorama Rentalss

I look forward to seeing you all in the forums of the new site at the workshops and hearing from you in the future.
Have a great weekend!
JamesNYC.

It's In The (e)Mail - An introduction to creating effective email campaigns

by Jon Hornstein,  February 29, 2008 Postcard mailers have been a standard promotional tool for photographers for decades. And while they still serve an important function, email blasts have largely overtaken postcards as the preferred way for photographers to reach out to potential clients and keep in touch with existing clients. Email has many advantages over postcards. With email, you can track who receives your message, who opens it and if they click-through on any images or links....

Studio Strobes - 'Cost per watt second'

Well last week, Thursday or Friday, I can't remember. I was speaking with a friend when he asked. "So James, what strobes are the best, what studio strobes do you like?" "Ummm, I like the ones that work." "Seriously, light is light. I'm just as happy to work with painters work lights as I am with strobes or kino-flo's. I just hate getting broken rental equipment." "All strobes use xenon flash tubes. The gas in the tubes is always the same. The glass for...

losing our art, loosing our science, and forgetting our history

I recognize that I'm writing two somewhat serious, if not critical pieces back to back, but some of these ideas have been festering for a while and now seems as good as any time to get them out. Several years ago while waiting on set for a model to show up, an assistant and I were looking through the current copy of "W" magazine. We came upon a series of images that had been shot by Irving Penn. "Oh cool, Irving Penn's got a fashion story in 'W'." This came to us as a...

Flying with spare lithium batteries

As pointed out in this forums post by Matt

 http://forums.photoassistant.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000283

Many people are having difficulty traveling with spare rechargable batteries.

Effective January 1, 2008, the following rules apply to the spare lithium batteries you carry with you in case the battery in a device runs low:

  • Spare batteries are the batteries you carry separately from the devices they power. When batteries are installed in a device, they are not considered spare batteries.
  • You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked baggage
  • You may bring spare lithium batteries with you in carry-on baggage – see our spare battery tips and how-to sections to find out how to pack spare batteries safely!
  • Even though we recommend carrying your devices with you in carry-on baggage as well, if you must bring one in checked baggage, you may check it with the batteries installed.

You can read the whole story here:  http://safetravel.dot.gov/whats_new_batteries.html

Looks like FedEx will be very busy shipping batteries in the near future.

Hasselblad Phocus - public Beta,..probably Jan '08

Hasselblads new digital capture software named Phocus is expected to be released as a public BETA in Jan 2008.

Hasselblad has been busy making changes to Phocus since we first say it at the PhotoPlus Expo several weeks ago.

Phocus "WILL RUN ON LEOPARD". In fact it will run ONLY on leopard. It is not being designed to run on any legacy MAC OS.

Other new additions to Phocus is files process to multiple files types during the file processing session. IE: you'll now be able to process the Hasse RAW file to both TIFF and JPG at the same time. Next up is improved naming conventions and file numbering.

More info as I can get it from my contacts.

The Art of Conversation - How to manage your discussions with clients

The Art of Conversation

by Jon Hornstein, December 13, 2007

How to manage your discussions with clients

For photographers, one of the most underappreciated aspects of marketing is knowing how to speak with clients when discussing a job. Whether it’s before the assignment is awarded or afterwards when preparing for an upcoming shoot, the way a photographer handles the conversation with the client helps to determine the fate of the job at hand. It can also enhance, or damage, their overall reputation in the industry.

To have a successful conversation with a client, keep the following in mind:

    Prepare
Before the call, review all the information you have about the job. It might be comps, emails, notes or bids. Then take it a step further. Look-up information on the Internet about the person or people you’ll be speaking with. If it’s for a commercial job, research the agency to see the type of work they do, and the client to get a sense of the company’s brand. For editorial jobs, learn what you can about the background of the story you’ll be shooting, as well as the editorial perspective of the publication. For corporate work, get a sense of how the company has used photography in the past. Also, be sure to write down all the questions you’ll need answered.

The new Leopard - sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't

The OSX  version 10.5 or leopard to many, has a problem playing nice with others. This is due, for the most part to the fact that Apple chose not to release the OS code to software developers until after they released the new operating system.

And yes by now it is well known that most photo related programs DO NOT work 100% or in some instances at all with the new Leopard and it's spots.

But before going further I need to pose the question "Why would anyone adopt a new OS for there everyday or worse yet there business upon it's initial release?"

Regardless of whether it's Apple or Microsoft haven't we seen that every new OS release has bugs? Of course they do, there designed by real live people; and people make mistakes.

Ok so the bulk of the emails I'm receiving revolve around Phase One capture 1 Pro. No surprise here, C1Pro V.3.7.7 does not work well with OSX 10.5 but there is some info that may get it a bit closer to useable until Capture 1 Pro V.3.7.8 comes out which is expected to resolve all issues. whe does it come out? "... Oh it should be out sometime in December.." said my Phase One contact last month.

Using the below listed workaround, Capture One 3.7.7 will install on the new Apple OS 10.5, Leopard. Running Capture One 3.7.7 on 10.5 is not officially supported.  http://www.phaseone.com/HOME/Content/Support/Article.aspx?articleid=1382&LanguageID=1&layoutid=SupportSite%20-%20Main

Based on our testing it appears that, PowerPhase FX+ scan software, Image Capture Software 4.0, will work on Mac OS 10.5  http://www.phaseone.com/HOME/Content/Support/Article.aspx?articleid=1752&LanguageID=1&layoutid=SupportSite%20-%20Main

When trying to shoot tethered using a Canon camera using Capture One 3.7.7 on Mac OS 10.5, the camera fails to connect.   http://www.phaseone.com/HOME/Content/Support/Article.aspx?articleid=1518&LanguageID=1&layoutid=SupportSite%20-%20Main

CF card importer does not import any images even though it appears to be transferring the images. When attempting to transfer images the error "Failed to move image for unknown reason" window will present itself.

Phase One & Mamiya. Yet another

Phase one announced their new "Strategic alliance" with Mamiya yesterday.

"Phase One and Mamiya together are committed to equipping photographers with what they need to surpass even their most passionate visions and enjoy the process," said Henrik Håkonsson, CEO of Phase One. "Phase One is committed to open modular systems thus supporting photographers’ full freedom of choice."

This answers the question as to which camera company with be accepting Phase One backs now that Hasselblad has chosen to build their "Integrated" and many say Closed system with the release of the H3D system.
This too is the second "Strategic alliance" by Phase One in the last 14 days.. Previously it was their Microsoft alliance as of 11/1/2007.

These two moves further strengthen Phase Ones already dominant 60% Digital Capture market share by offering greater medium format camera options primarily pro-summers but also to professionals; and in providing a lower cost medium format camera system that will work with the Phase One P+ series digital backs.
This certainly will continue to make it more cost effective for young photographers, photo assistants, photo students and pro-summers to gain access to the tools used for high-end digital capture with out needing to sell a kidney or take out a second mortgage.

While Phase One digital backs have always been an option with Mamiya cameras; either via a dedicated digital back for the 645 AFD or by using an adapter plate such as the ones used for the Mamiya RZ Pro II & Pro IID cameras there are now clear indications that a new Mamiya/Phase cameras is in the works. ".... 'They' have been working on something for some time..".
Also a series of digital lenses is said to be in development. "...there is clearly an opening for 'Other' German lens manufactures to provide high quality lens options for the current or up coming Mamiya systems." ".. the possibility for there to be a series of high-end lenses in the some what near future is extremely good,.. actually it is extremely likely..."

Mamiya has been a dominant player in professional commercial photography for years and is ubiquitous on many fashion , catalog, and advertising shoots around the country.
The Mamiya 645 was the workhorse of choice before the Contax 645 came on the scene about 12 years ago. and now that Contax is gone and Hasselblad has focused on it's integrated system; Mamiya is still there waiting to be picked up and used again just like that old  68' Nova that sits parked in the street, and seems to be the only car that will start first thing in the morning in the dead of winter.

So where is Capture 1 Pro V.3.7.8 ?
"Yeah, it'll be out next week" , "Yeah, it'll be out next week" , "Yeah, it'll be out next week" , "Yeah, it'll be out next week" ... (Phase One internal response.)

Ok. you'll be able to stop holding your breath MAYBE, sometime during the first week of December.
Expect a few changes, mostly in terms of improved stability.
DO NOT expect support for OS X Leopard, "...if there is any improved support it will be 'Iffy at best'..." This a a direct quote from one of my Phase One sources.

Out With The Old

by Jon Hornstein, November 14, 2007 Keep images in marketing material fresh One of the most difficult things for a photographer to do is to say “goodbye” to a favorite picture. Often photographers have a sentimental attachment to particular images. Perhaps these pictures have won awards, been featured in high-profile ad campaigns or magazine covers, or are simply great images that were creatively satisfying to make. If the photographer’s been in the business for a while, the...

Design Your Site For Function, Not Frills.

by Jon Hornstein, October 10, 2007 Avoid the 5 most common Website design mistakes There’s no doubt that a photographer’s most important marketing tool is their Website. But a Web site is a photographer’s chance to create a complete package for presenting their work, experience and personality to prospective clients. Unfortunately,...

PDNPulse - A Photo Assistant and His Mangled Arm

PDN Pulse ran this story about our friend Sean.

http://www.pdnpulse.com/2007/11/a-photo-assista.html

November 07, 2007

A Photo Assistant and His Mangled Arm

It's a sad reality that freelancers often fall through the gaps in America's patchwork health insurance system.

Sean Freelancers like Sean Moser. Sean is a photographer and photo assistant in New York who was seriously injured in a car accident this summer while returning from a job on Long Island. His arm was crushed and he required extensive medical treatment. He spent 38 days in the hospital and he continues to undergo outpatient physical therapy and likely will require more surgery. Like many freelancers, Sean lacked good insurance. He is waiting to see how much he'll be covered by the driver's car insurance and a basic New York State HIP policy, neither of which seems especially promising. (Sean says his surgeons don't take HIP.)

The immediate problem is that Sean is unable to work and faces a mountain of bills. I asked Sean about his financial situation, and here's what he wrote:

"The financial situation is fairly grim, I'm embarrassed to say. I am praying that this doesn't force me to give up my apartment here in the city to return to Asheville, NC to be temporarily forced to live with my folks. This would really crush my spirit and remove me from the proximity of the care of my surgeons and my excellent therapy. ... I will be basically holding the bag for pending future operations and whatever bounces back as unpaid or not approved. At this point with my complications I will be facing the possibility of several operations to hopefully restore me to the point I can work again."

I don't know Sean personally, but I checked with two people who vouch for him, photographer Charles Harris and James Sullivan of PhotoAssistant.net . Sullivan built a web site for Sean with support from MadActive Productions and photographer Jim Fiscus.

You can read all about Sean's injury – and send him a donation if you want to help – at www.seansmangledarm.com.

Good luck Sean, and get well soon.

ShootSac - Fashion comes to photo bags.

The woman of www.ShootSac.Com came up with a brilliant idea.

They designed a photo accessory bag that doesn't look like your fathers or grandfathers old camera bag.

If the brisk sales at the PhotoExpo are any indication its clear that the ShootSac is a real success. These cool looking bags were being bought up by both men and women.

Phase One CaptureOne v4.0.12285.Beta2 is now available.

DROBO data storage solution.

Data robotics describes the DROBO as a storage robot.  I first heard about this data storage device from DL.TV some time back in may or June. The DROBO is a USB 2.0 device that acts as a redundant storage device by writing data to multiple drives' but not as a RAID solution. Using multiple drive you can attain up to 2 Terabytes of storage. DROBO is also hot swappable so should there ever be a drive failure all you need to do is pull out the old drive, insert a new one and continue working...

NEW EIZO - 27 & 30 inch monitors

EIZO is introducing two new monitors beginning Jan 2008.

The 27” (March 2008) & the 30” (Jan 2008)  monitors will first be available as the FlexScan SX series and shortly after in the ColorEdge CG series.

Origanly these monitors were designed for high end medical aplications; but they also fit the growing needs of the high end digital capture market.

Sadly there are going to ba a lot of people wishing they would have waited for these monitors to arrive instead of having invested in all of those pretty Apple Cinema displays that tend to be 20 or more points magenta even after calibration.

All of these new monitors come equipped with EIZO’s latest ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). The ASIC has a12-bit look-up table with a total color palette of 68 billion colors from which the most appropriate 16.7 million are selected. The ASIC also features 16-bit internal processing for smooth display of grayscale tones, which brings out details, especially in dark areas of an image., the 30” monitors have a native resolution of 2560 × 1600 (16:10 aspect ratio).

The maximum brightness is 260 cd/m², contrast ratio is 900:1, and horizontal and vertical viewing angles are 178°. The wide gamut LCD panel reproduces 97% of the Adobe RGB color space so it can display most colors in a photograph taken in Adobe RGB mode.

New to these series of monitors is a picture-by-picture function divides the screen into two equal halves, essentially offering two1200 × 1600 monitors with no center bezel. Input from two different computers such as a
Windows and a Macintosh can be displayed which makes it possible to work on two tasks simultaneously without having to toggle back and forth between the inputs.

What’s the difference between a SX and a CG? The every CG model goes through a 426 step calibration process at the factory, across every inch of the LCD that takes more than 6 hours.
This explains why when he first pulled our CG220’s out of the box a year ago they were calibrated perfectly. And after 20 hours a day of continues use for the last 12 months our CG220’s used for the site and for our workshops still show no signs of color shift.

Sean Moser recovery fund.

Health and disability insurance is one of those luxuries that many of us just do with out; often hoping that we'll never have to worry about it.

This summer one of our photo community, Sean Moser a freelance assistant working in both NYC & La. was seriously injured in a car accident while returning from a location near the Hamptons.

Fuji GX645AF - The H1 as a history lesson.

This camera was first introduced back in 2002. and has been for sale in Japan almost as long. Strangely there is renewed talk of it on the internet. As most of you know the Hasselblad H1 & H2 cameras were in fact cameras manufactured by FUJI/FUJINON with the Hasselblad name licensed for use by FUJINON and using FUJINON lenses. So now that Hasselblad has opted to compete in the digital capture market with strictly an "Integrated system" what do you do with a manufacturing process...

Capture One Pro V.4.0.BETA - is it ready for the real world?

Capture One Pro V.4.0.BETA This long over due, much talked about and hyped for the past 2 and a half years, "Major release" from Phase One: but is it ready for the real world? That's very hard to say because Phase One has chosen to only release the C1Pro LE V.4.0 BETA into the wilds.   Phase has had their sales reps showing V.4.0 to rental studio and select photographers here in NYC for the past 6-8 months that I have been aware of. I initially saw a Pre-Pre-Pre-Release...

FlexColor 4.7.1 - issues

Last week I worked on a job that included using the Hasselblad H3D system and digital back. This choice of digital capture system was based on a special promotion being offered by Hasselblad. (The photographer regularly uses Phase or Leaf.)   All most immediately we began experiencing problems with the camera during the evenings pre-light. Since the rental company was closed I called my Hasselblad contact directly and he was kind enough to help us out during his commute home. Our initial...

Digital Back Shoot Out - By: Running Pixels

Running Pixels did a heavy shoot test with the new Digital Backs. This test was about speed and stress, not processing. Here's a link to the Results PDF. Lots of info so probably better to print it out and read versus scrolling and zooming on your screen.   Digital Back Shoot Out Results -------------------- Erik Hillard http://www.runningpixels.net/ Los Angeles, CA.

FolLow up on NYC Film petition.

Subject: We did it!   Just in case you haven't already heard, the Petition to Save Street Photography in New York City was a huge success! So many people stood up for our collective rights and said "No way", the MOFTB Permit Office had to drop it! If you signed the Petition, wrote letters to the MOFTB or just simply forwarded the email, 'Thank you' for helping to raise awareness! Democracy in action can be such a beautiful thing!!!! FIRE! at PhotoAssistant.Net web site and studio.

FIRE! at PhotoAssistant.Net web site/studio. Upon returning home from taking my daughter upstate to summer camp I came to find that there had been a fire in my apartment. Thankfully it did not spread to the rest of the building or effect others in the building other than the stench of burning plastic and some smoke. This was a fluke accident, and again thankfully no one was hurt or severely  inconvenienced. Unfortunately for us two servers and a monitor were damaged and there is...
